Overview

LIFT uses an evidence-based curriculum to dispel common myths of HT; engage local community stakeholders so health professionals may connect their patients to local medical, legal, and social services; and equip health professionals with specific tools to provide trauma-informed care to patients and to build HT protocols for their respective institutions. By engaging health professionals directly in multiple cities and states, PATH and the LIFT curriculum assist victims of trafficking both locally and on a national level.

An optional Train-the-Trainer session* (not eligible for CE credit) will be offered 1:15 - 4:15 pm for a maximum of 20 interested participants. 

*The Train-the-Trainer session provides the tools for participants to conduct their own lectures about human trafficking in their communities. By allowing time for further discussion of the topics addressed, as well as a short presentation to other participants and the PATH physician facilitator, the train-the-trainer session prepares new leaders in human trafficking education, thereby creating a ripple effect to the LIFT curriculum. To encourage continued conversation about human trafficking, we will provide all LIFT train-the-trainer participants with an evidence-based PowerPoint presentation and instructions on how to discuss human trafficking responsibly (taking into account constantly changing statistics and laws) and compassionately (emphasizing respectful use of language and avoiding sensationalizing the topic).

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. describe the scope and prevalence of the problem of labor trafficking and sex trafficking in the United States
  2. recognize the warning signs that raise suspicion for human trafficking victimization
  3. assess suspected victims of trafficking and identify trafficked persons who present to the health care setting
  4. identify the number for the National Human Trafficking Hotline
  5. clinically evaluate and treat any patient suspected of being trafficked, using trauma-informed reporting techniques and local and national resources

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Indiana University School of Medicine and American Medical Women's Association. Indiana University School of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
