Overview

More than 12,000 Hoosier were living with HIV in 2016. Although the majority of people with HIV in Indiana report sexual behaviors as their primary risk,the number of individuals with injection drug use (IDU) as a primary or co-risk factor is increasing. “Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America” lays out strategies to “Diagnose, Treat, Protect, and Respond”. Reducing HIV viral loads in those infected prevents illness and prevents transmission of HIV to others. Increasing awareness of HIV transmission prevention measures like PrEP and PEP will further reduce transmission.

The HIV ECHO at the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health ECHO Center will help develop clinical workforce in Indiana to work towards these goals by linking clinicians in the primary care setting with a network of peers and sub-specialists using videoconferencing. Regularly scheduled teleclinics train providers in evidenced-based practices for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HIV in diverse patient populations.

The Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) model leverages scarce resources, reduces disparities, and facilitates mastery of skills to treat for common, yet complex medical conditions. The ECHO Center hosts a variety of topic-specific ECHO programs including HCV ECHO, HIV ECHO, LGBTQ+ ECHO, and continues to launch new programs.

Benefits of Participation include:

  • Free continuing education including CME, ANCC, ACPE, AAFP Prescribed Credit, and social work
  • The opportunity to present your complex cases and receive feedback from specialists and your peers
  • Improve your skills and practice at the top of your license
  • Retain patients in their medical home
  • Open access to all ECHO references and resources

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Implement guideline-recommended HIV screening and preventative methods based on risk factors;
  2. Utilize patient characteristics and desires to appropriately and effectively choose HIV treatment strategies that maximize the potential of achieving viral suppression;
  3. Integrate critical components of comprehensive care for patients with HIV
