Overview
Have you ever felt awkward talking about sexual health with your patients or students? Have you ever felt like you didn't have enough time or expertise to talk about these topics? Are you finding it hard to keep up with the evolving language and clinical topics around sexual health and gender? Join Juan Carlos Venis, MD, MPH, and Audrey Todd, MS2, for an engaging discussion that will seek to improve provider's comfort in taking a comprehensive, LGBTQ+ inclusive, sexual history and applying that knowledge to the instruction of undergraduate medical students. This session will provide a variety of hands-on practice through a combination of interactive didactic instruction and small group case-based activities facilitated by students and/or residents. We will emphasize creating a safe space for participants to discuss these evolving, intersecting, and sometimes uncomfortable topics. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute to research aimed to support our and other medical schools' response to health inequities impacting LGBTQ+ people nationally.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize and explain how implicit bias can affect healthcare for LGBTQ+ patients
  2. Explain LGBTQ+ definitions, concepts, and health disparities
  3. Complete an accurate, comprehensive sexual health history using gender-neutral language and open-ended questions
  4. Apply sexual history taking best practices to the instruction of undergraduate medical students
