Objectives
At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:

  1. List 5 pollutants that have been associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in the pediatric population;
  2. Recognize the importance of relationships as a key driver for development early in children’s lives with a new awareness of toxic stress and how it differentially affects the early brain and results in long-term issues;
  3. List the common forms of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), and describe how increased LARC use can reducing adolescent unintended pregnancies;

  5. Explain simple and effective ways to incorporate early literacy promotion into well visits to foster early brain development and school readiness;
  6. Explain the "why" behind the AAP's safe sleep recommendations to families in the era of social media and an ever-expanding market of infant sleep products;
  7. Recognize important causes of hypotonia that have require early treatment;
  8. Explain collagen vascular diseases which are influenced by environment as well as discuss ultraviolet exposure effects on the skin;
  9. Describe how early nutritional experiences in the infant can alter later neuropsychological development;
  10. Discuss the effects of trauma and toxic stress on the developing brain and how those changes can manifest in adolescence and adulthood;
  11. Advise families on behaviors that will reduce chemical exposures;
  12. Explain how complex trauma and adverse childhood experiences can affect developmental, behavioral, and mental health secondary to permanent changes in the growing brain and learn strategies to address developmental and psychosocial concerns;
  13. Explain the neurobiology of Attachment Theory and how postpartum depression affects the neurodevelopment of the infant;

Learners will also be able to elaborate on the historical context of marketing to children and the effects it may have upon them and explain the pros and cons of digital media and ebook usage;
  17. Explain the primary care providers role in developmental screening and how Help Me Grow can assist practices in implementing recommended screening as well as learn examples of other resources that primary care providers can use to promote early brain development during office visits;
