Overview

Immerse yourself in the British countryside as you expand your understanding of global nursing and health care issues! Harlaxton College is proud to present the inaugural Nightingale and Nursing in the U.K. : A Harlaxton Nursing Immersion Experience. Join us this summer in our unique manor house for a retreat designed for nurses and nurse educators. We will host a series of interactive sessions with local health care providers around the theme of nursing and health care in the British health care system, along with nursing and health care related visits across England.

Field trips include historical and cultural sites in London and rural England. CEUs for this program have been applied for and will be offered pending approval. Your visit to England and Harlaxton Manor also includes an immersion in the British culture with visits to local castles, a welcome reception, a traditional pub dinner, and a paint and sip evening. There will be ample time for forging new friendships amongst other nurses and nurse educators in this exceptional setting. At the end of the week, we will say goodbye with a high tea in the State Rooms.

During your week in England you will achieve the following objectives through your participation in the program:

  • Develop an understanding of the U.K. National Health Service and the comprehensive services it provides to citizens of the U.K.

  • Compare and contrast the issues affecting the U.K. nursing workforce to the U. S. nursing workforce.

  • Describe the influence and impact of Florence Nightingale on the nursing profession, public health care, and social reform.

  • Explore historical pandemic societal responses in 17th century England and implications for contemporary global health care responses.

The following suggested readings may be of interest to you as you prepare for your immersion in the British health care system:

  • Brooks, G. (2001). Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague Nightingale, F. (original publication 1859).

  • Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not. Worth, J. (2002). Call the Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times.

Registration

The program is surprisingly affordable and the deadline for the early bird rate of $2,450 is 15th February 2025, or 23rd April 2025 for the regular rate of $2,550.

Please register online using the registration portal.
