Overview

Until recently, research and treatments for cystic fibrosis (CF) targeted symptoms and did not address the root cause. However, since the discovery of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), efforts have shifted toward correcting the underlying genetic variants (other wise known as mutations). Although progress has been gradual, advancements in understanding CFTR-related challenges and the emergence of new techniques have paved the way for several clinical trials. These trials aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of gene therapy, a promising area expected to grow in the coming years.

Gene therapy studies in CF are inherently complex, requiring long-term follow-up and significant commitment from CF healthcare teams, patients and their support network. To support CF healthcare teams in navigating these challenges, this topic is divided into two focused courses.

Course 11 features three modules that address the challenges of informed consent for gene therapy studies and provides team members with tools for talking to people with CF and their families about gene therapy. Additionally, the final module outlining how safety is protected during clinical trials.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain how safety is monitored during gene therapy studies and practice effective means for obtaining informed consent;
  2. Illustrate effective strategies and tools to discuss gene therapy trials with people with CF.
