Emergency Medicine Common Procedural Pearls

This CME activity provides emergency medicine clinicians with a comprehensive, system-based overview of essential procedures. Each module guides participants through every step of the procedure—from preparation to execution and post-procedure care—while also serving as a concise, easily accessible reference for quick review in clinical practice.

 

Module 1: ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Procedures

This module guides emergency medicine clinicians through key ENT procedures, offering step-by-step instruction and a quick-reference tool for use in acute care settings.

 

Module 2: Musculoskeletal and Orthopedic Procedures

This module guides emergency medicine clinicians through select musculoskeletal and orthopedic procedures, offering step-by-step instruction and a quick-reference tool for use in acute care settings.

 

Module 3: Trauma and Nerve Blocks

This module guides emergency medicine clinicians through select nerve blocks and trauma related procedures, offering step-by-step instruction and a quick-reference tool for use in acute care settings.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in performing essential Emergency Medicine procedures.
  2. Perform emergency medicine procedures with attention to patient safety and sterile technique.
  3. Apply appropriate decision-making and technical skills to perform emergency medicine procedures.
  4. Identify indications, contraindications, and potential complications associated with common emergency department procedures, integrating this knowledge into procedural planning and execution.
  5. Develop a systematic approach to the preparation, execution, and post-procedure care for emergency medicine interventions, ensuring patient safety and adherence to best practices.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to critically assess the need for procedural intervention in the emergency setting, balancing risks, benefits, and patient-centered considerations

HOW TO WATCH THE ONLINE COURSE(S):

All learners must first register to view the modules they want to complete. If you do not have a CloudCME account, you will need to create one by visiting iu.cloud-cme.com.

Step1: Click on the 'Register' tab above.

Step 2: Pick which modules you wish to complete. You must choose 'Registration Type' before choosing the module(s) to complete.

Step 3: Once you have registered and purchased the modules you want to complete, you will receive an email* with the access links. You must complete the units within each module in order.

*If you do not receive the email with the link(s) within 48 hours after purchase, please contact Heather Hollcraft, CEAC ([email protected]).

Step 4: After reviewing a unit, complete the post-test to move onto the next unit.

Step 5: After all units within a module have been completed, click on the evaluation button. 

Step 6: Complete the evaluation.

Each module is 2.0 credits of CME with a maximum of 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  You can access the modules anytime 24/7 to complete.

NEXT STEPS AFTER COMPLETING ALL MODULES:
Follow the next steps through CloudCME to receive a CME certificate:

1. Sign into your account at CloudCME, which is the online learning portal to document and track your continuing education credit:  iu.cloud-cme.com 

(NOTE: if you do not have a CloudCME account, there is a link on the CloudCME landing page to create one.)

2.  After watching all modules and completing the evaluations, click the 'Evaluations and Certificates' tile under the 'My CME' button in the upper right hand area of the portal page. You can download a certificate from here.

**Participants must view the entire module AND submit a completed evaluation to receive credit**


Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, Indiana University School of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Physicians
Indiana University School of Medicine designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Each module is designated for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

American Board of Surgery (ABS)

Successful completion of this CME activity enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME requirement of the American Board of Surgery's Continuous Certification Program. Each module enables the learner to earn 2.0 credit toward the CME requirement of the American Board of Surgery's Continuous Certification Program for a maximum of 6.0 credits. It is the CME activity's provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABS credit.
