For more information about the Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics, please visit www.fairbankscenter.org

AM and PM Workshops:

  1. Religious Exemptions for the COVID-19 Vaccine: Personal Convictions vs Public Safety
  2. This breakout session will present results of a national study of healthcare chaplains who formally evaluated co-worker’s religious exemption requests for the COVID-19 vaccine.  As religious content experts chaplains found meaning in this role even as they experienced considerable moral, theological, and personal distress. Causes of distress included the use/misuse of religion for political ends, the process of judging “sincerity of belief,” unfairness/bias toward members of specific religious traditions, and conflict between the chaplain’s own ethical stance about COVID vaccination in the workplace and that of the applicants under consideration.
Workshop attendees will be invited to consider their own stances on mandatory COVID-19 vaccination in the workplace as well as reflect on the complex ethical questions raised by employees seeking religious accommodations of any sort.

  3. Advance Care Planning Conversations with Patients: How to Elicit Patient’s Values & Preferences
  4. There are many barriers to helping a person to have Advance Care Planning Conversations.  Join this workshop to help you think about moving the conversation from completing Advance Directives to having Advance Care Planning Conversations.  We will look at questions to ask to help a patient think about their values and preferences, help them select a Health Care Representative, and assist them in having these difficult conversations with their loved ones.

  5. Clinical Organizational Ethics
  6. In this workshop, attendees will learn how to identify the necessary components for a successful clinical organizational ethics program.  At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees should be able to differentiate clinical organizational ethics from clinical ethics.  Attendees will learn how a successful clinical organizational ethics program can create a positive systematic change, improve patient care, and alleviate team member’s moral distress.

  7. How to Write an Ethics Consult Note
  8. In this workshop, attendees will discuss the unique and focused goals of ethics consultation and their value to healthcare delivery.  Participants will participate in a discussion of important aspects of ethics consultation documentation, then review a hypothetical ethics consultation and practice note writing for said case.

  9. Pediatric Ethics
  10. Description to come soon

  11. Clinical Ethics 101
  12. This session will provide a brief overview of clinical ethics and discuss a general approach for addressing ethical dilemmas arising in healthcare. Attendees will learn the general framework and process of an ethics consultation, including four central components of a quality ethics consultation: clarifying the ethical issue(s) prompting the consult; gathering the relevant information; ethically analyzing the gathered information; and providing sound ethical recommendations. Attendees will participate in applying this general approach to a hypothetical ethics consult case.
