Overview
A one-day lecture series held virtually and live, provided by IU Health practitioners regarding Emergency Medicine. Topics will include Emergency Medicine Lit Review and Evidence Based Practice, Dizziness and Syncope, Malpractice, Clinical Decision-Making Tools, Non-Accidental Trauma and Head Injuries, Pain Management, Managing Ketoacidosis and Sickle Cell Treatment. Learners will have access after event.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate key critical appraisal skills imperative for accurate interpretation of emerging medical literature.
  2. Discuss key findings of randomized studies comparing balanced fluids vs. normal saline in ill adult and pediatric patients.
  3. Review efficacy and side effects of common antibiotics used for inpatients and outpatients with bacterial infection.
  4. Discuss trends in malpractice lawsuits to highlight areas of risk in emergency medicine for APPs and physicians.
  5. Utilize actual malpractice cases to improve awareness of patient safety and liability risks in emergency medicine.
  6. Discuss the challenges of determining the most appropriate disposition (discharge, admission, observation) for emergency department patients presenting with syncope.
  7. Describe the Canadian Syncope Risk Score and evaluate its utility and limitations.
  8. Discuss high yield diagnoses for pregnant and postpartum patients presenting to the ER: pregnancy of unknown anatomic location, 1st trimester bleeding, 2nd trimester bleeding, hyperemesis gravidarum, hypertensive diseases of pregnancy(preeclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP) 
  9. -Describe differential diagnosis, typical presentation, work up, and level of urgency
  10. Discuss how the differential diagnosis changes from trimester to trimester to postpartum. 
  11. List 2-3 influencing factors on the patient experience of care.
  12. Discuss the role of compassion in healthcare and behaviors which beget perception of compassion and connection.
  13. Apply 2-3 best practice communication techniques into your daily patient and family interactions.

Registration

Advanced Practice Providers, Physicians and Learners are encouraged to attend this event.  

Program cost is $100 for IU Health team members, $125 for non-IU Health providers and $25 for students. 

Lunch will be provided for in-person guests only.
