Overview
The Indiana Geriatrics Society (IGS) will be hosting their thirteenth Annual Fall Conference on Friday, October 15, 2021 virtually. We anticipate hosting 100 to 200 professionals involved in the care of older adults throughout Indiana. The IGS membership includes multiple disciplines from the health care system, including physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, case managers, therapists, and other who are involved in the care of older adults. Our conference theme this year is “Geriatric Care in 2021- Thriving and Beyond”. The purpose of this conference is to provide attendees with learning opportunities on topics focusing on the post-pandemic era including: helping individuals who are suffering from long-term effects of COVID; changes in nursing home care in the aftermath of COVID; assisting healthcare workers who are experiencing compassion fatigue; and addressing new and emergent issues in geriatric care.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the theory behind the mode of action of aducanumab;
  2. Describe the phenomenon of compassion fatigue in healthcare workers and the means to combat it;
  3. Describe the impact of COVID19 pandemic on nursing home operators and staff;
  4. Identify strategies for collaborative communication with the nursing home industry and state regulators;
  5. Describe basic treatment principles for treatment of COVID-19 “Long haulers";
  6. Describe two innovative approaches to addressing older adults’ social determinants of health;
  7. Describe basic self-care practices especially important for healthcare workers; and
  8. Discuss how the Agile Approach to problem solving can be used in clinical research and practice.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Indiana University School of Medicine and Indiana Geriatrics Society. Indiana University School of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
