Overview

Diversity and Inclusion in Rural Healthcare Systems is a multimedia experience whereby attendees will examine race through several different lenses with the goal of changing how we see, engage, understand, promote and respond to being racialized. The session is designed to engage the healthcare team in a series of critical thinking activities which will help them strategize on how Racial stratification is granted, how it creates power dynamics between and within marginalized groups, reinforces stereotypes, creates and maintains privilege, and promotes the ideology of racial supremacy. The workshop will conclude by helping attendees develop ten immediately actionable steps to recognize and counter the negative impact of systemic racism, inequitable treatment, and a lack of inclusion in their personal, professional, and educational environments.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the differences between diversity, equity and inclusion using medical eye care as an analogous theory
  2. Discuss and apply a tool for personal and professional self-assessment, planning and responding to issues of difference and inequity
  3. Critically think about the hospitals brand, services, goals and mission as it relates to equity and inclusion
  4. Describe staff, and patient value within the hospital, their community and beyond.
  5. Improve communication and apply adaptive strategies for cross cultural conflict resolution.
  6. Learn and apply 10 immediately actionable steps to enhance understanding of equity and inclusion
  7. Discuss inquiries about historical basis for current equity and inclusion efforts and policies
