Overview
Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a guided-practice model that aims to increase workforce capacity by sharing knowledge and resources. A panel of experts at the “hub” site meet regularly with medical providers and healthcare teams in Indiana communities via videoconferencing to provide training on the delivery of care for adolescents with Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Through tele-mentoring, ECHO creates access to high-quality specialty care and reduces disparities in rural and medically underserved communities. This “hub and spoke” model creates a learning loop where community providers learn from specialists and from each other allowing best practices to emerge. TeleECHO clinics can empower healthcare providers to become community leaders in treating for complex medical conditions. Project ECHO will not only look at the medical treatment of SUD in adolescents but will also explore how to address other social issues such as legal, behavioral health and educational needs.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activities participants should be able to:

  1. Identify Evidenced Based Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder and how addiction is a brain disease
  2. Identify gaps and barriers to treating OUD on the scene of an overdose and in the emergency room setting
  3. Assess, Screen and Diagnose OUD on the scene or in emergency department and harm reduction strategies
  4. Review and apply Crisis intervention strategies and ways to discuss addiction with family members, patient and others on the scene
  5. Discuss where and how to refer clients to additional resources

Accreditation
In support of improving patient care, Indiana University School of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
