Overview
It is estimated that 11% of adults experience daily pain (CDC). For millions of Americans, opioids remain the cornerstone of treatment for their chronic pain, despite the lack of evidence around efficacy and the alarming rates of opioid addiction, overdose, and death. Although primary care providers express concern about the risks of opioid prescribing, the report feeling unprepared to adequately manage chronic pain with or without opioids in their patient populations. The Comprehensive Pain Management ECHO at the IU Indianapolis ECHO Center addresses this gap by providing access to up-to-date CPM education and evidence-based strategies to health professionals from interdisciplinary practices across the state of Indiana. The CPM ECHO will support further implementation of the state and national pain management best practice guidelines through curriculum regarding physiology and psychology of pain, non-medication modalities for pain management, assessing for substance use disorder, pharmacotherapeutics, etc.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Enhance the capacity of primary care providers in rural and underserved communities to assess patients presenting with chronic pain and provide evidence-based pain management.
  2. Utilize transdisciplinary healthcare teams to assess and manage care of patients with chronic pain.
  3. Practice the appropriate use of opioids for the management of chronic pain

Accreditation
In support of improving patient care, Indiana University School of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Nurses
Indiana University School of Medicine designates this activity for a maximum of 1.25 ANCC contact hours. Nurses should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Pharmacists
