Overview

This 4-part series is designed for family medicine practitioners. Part 1 is a review of assessment and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Part 2 is an introduction to early onset Alzheimer's disease (Alzheimer's disease with symptom onset before age 65). Part 3 covers Alzheimer's disease in traditionally underserved groups and the importance of diverse representation in research. Finally, Part 4 is a brief overview of biomarkers and their use in the early detection of Alzheimer's disease. Faculty from the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Indiana Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (IADRC) will share their expertise with course participants on these topics.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Differentiate normal cognitive aging from mild cognitive impairment from dementia
  2. Identify next steps and appropriate referrals for further workup of memory problems when Alzheimer's disease is suspected
  3. Describe early onset Alzheimer's disease and its atypical variant presentations
  4. Recognize symptoms that differentiate early onset Alzheimer's disease from psychiatric conditions (which reduce misdaignosis)
  5. Characterize the risk of Alzheimer's disease for Black/AA and Latino/a Americans
  6. List at least three factors to keep in mind when inviting individuals from traditionally underserved groups to participate in research
  7. Explain how inclusion of biomarkers into the NIA-AA criteria for dementia and MCI due to probable Alzheimer's disease improves diagnostic accuracy
  8. Identify and describe at least three biomarker methods for Alzheimer's disease and their level of specificity for disease detection
