Overview
It is estimated that 11% of adults experience daily pain (CDC). For millions of Americans, opioids remain the cornerstone of treatment for their chronic pain, despite the lack of evidence around efficacy and the alarming rates of opioid addiction, overdose, and death. Although primary care providers express concern about the risks of opioid prescribing, the report feeling unprepared to adequately manage chronic pain with or without opioids in their patient populations. The Integrated Pain Management ECHO at the IUPUI ECHO Center addresses this gap by providing access to up-to-date IPM education and evidence-based strategies to health professionals from interdisciplinary practices across the state of Indiana. The IPM ECHO will support further implementation of the state and national pain management best practice guidelines through curriculum regarding physiology and psychology of pain, non-medication modalities for pain management, assessing for substance use disorder, pharmacotherapeutics, etc.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Enhance the capacity of primary care providers in rural and underserved communities to assess patients presenting with chronic pain and provide evidence-based pain management;
  2. Engage family medicine residents and care teams in evidence-based care of pain;
  3. Utilize interprofessional teams to assess and manage care of patients with chronic pain; and
  4. Practice the appropriate use of opioids for the management of chronic pain.
