Overview
This one-day educational event will focus on addressing tobacco use in local healthcare and community settings. Target audience for this event include, but are not limited to: physicians, advance practice providers, pharmacists, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, social workers, mental health counselors, addiction counselors, and peer recovery specialists. This event will consist of four separate topic areas: 1. Introduction to Tobacco and Behavioral Health This presentation will review the tobacco use prevalence among adults with mental illness, substance use disorder (SUD), and co-occurring disorders. A discussion on how tobacco and nicotine use negatively impacts behavioral health treatment and recovery will occur among participants. 2. Vaping – A Community Conversation - The general public may be interested in attending this session During this presentation, a description and data will be provided on current trends of electronic cigarette use among both youth and adults. There will also be a discussion on the impacts of vaping including potential health impacts. In addition to the presentation, a panel of local community members and leaders will have a discussion on vaping in the community. 3. Introduction to Motivational Interviewing for Tobacco Treatment This presentation will include a review and demonstration on how to use the basic skills of motivational interviewing (MI) when working with tobacco dependent patients and clients. 4. Introduction to Tobacco Treatment Medications The presentation will provide a review of the seven FDA-approved pharmacotherapies for tobacco treatment, including directions for use and pros/cons. A review of the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal criteria will also be presented.

Objectives
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review the tobacco use prevalence among adults with mental illness and/or substance use disorder (behavioral health conditions).
  2. Discuss how tobacco and nicotine use impacts behavioral health treatment and recovery.
  3. Discuss evidence-based treatment strategies for treating tobacco/nicotine dependence.
  4. Review data on the current trends of electronic cigarette use among both youth and adults.
  5. Present marketing tactics seen both nationally and locally for e-cigarette products
  6. Discuss vaping issues at the local community level with community leaders and members
  7. Review and demonstrate how to use the basic skills of motivational interviewing when working with tobacco dependent patients
  8. Describe and recognize change talk
  9. Conduct role play activities to apply patient-centered principles to motivational interviewing strategies for working with tobacco dependent patients.
  10. Review of FDA-approved pharmacotherapies for tobacco treatment, including directions for use, pros/cons
  11. Define the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal criteria
  12. Discuss the FDA-mandated "EAGLES Study" and impact on tobacco treatment medications

Indiana University School of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Nurses
Indiana University School of Medicine designates this activity for a maximum of 4.0 ANCC contact hours. Nurses should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Pharmacists
