IU Health North Fall Primary Care Update

The program will focus on obesity with talks on the following topics:

• Non-alcoholic fatty liver; 
• Medical weight loss: meal replacement and newly approved medications;
• Surgical weight loss;
• When CPAP is not enough (obesity primary disease process);
• Talking with patients about their weight and weight loss from a dieticians point of view; and 
• Outcomes of bariatric surgery.

1. Recognize the epidemiology of NAFLD, describe how to diagnose NAFLD, and better manage NAFLD in practice;
2. Identify clinical situations in which adults with obesity may benefit from pharmacological intervention for weight management; Plan appropriate diet and meal menus based on patient characteristics, needs and preferences as a part of individualized treatment plans;
3. Summarize the different weight loss surgeries available and describe how to care for the patients after the surgery; Discuss factors to determine if a patient is a good candidate for weight loss surgery;
4. Identify best practices in identification of excessive airway obstruction cause, Recall and apply weight loss measures in patients; and Recognize appropriate use of CPAP;
5. Recognize role of dietitian and when to utilize dietitian with patient for education on weight loss; and
6. Analyze the safety, efficacy, and the associate complications contemporary bariatric procedures in managing obesity.
