Overview

Learn from the nationally ranked Riley Children’s Orthopedics & Sports Medicine team as they highlight many of the current treatment and screening guidelines, as well as therapeutic needs of pediatric patients with sports-related injuries. Speakers include orthopedic sports surgeons and physicians, sports medicine subspecialty providers, physical therapists, Pediatric Rheumatology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, dietician, pediatric cardiologist, and Pediatric Pulmonary. The following are high-level topics: ¦ Common injuries in runners and swimmers ¦ Injuries not to miss in endurance athletes ¦ Respiratory complaints including vocal cord dysfunction ¦ Nutrition: Fueling the body for endurance activities ¦ Rheumatological mimics in pediatric athletes

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Examine psychosocial and psychological factors influencing injury, rehabilitation, and return to play, and apply strategies that promote coping, resilience, and safe reintegration into sport.
  2. Analyze normal and abnormal cardiovascular and pulmonary responses to exercise, and implement appropriate evaluation, diagnostic, and evidence-based management strategies for conditions such as EIB, EILO, and cardiac adaptations.
  3. Evaluate the physiological demands of endurance exercise, and integrate nutritional and hydration strategies to optimize performance, reduce risk, and manage short- and long-term consequences of inadequate intake.
  4. Apply biomechanical, physiological, and psychosocial principles to injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation in adaptive and pediatric athletes, emphasizing safe return to play and the importance of inclusive, multidisciplinary approaches.
  5. Recognize, evaluate, and manage exercise-associated collapse and other acute conditions in athletes, incorporating rapid diagnosis, appropriate interventions, and safe return-to-play guidelines.
  6. Interpret the physiological processes of bone remodeling and stress injury development, and apply evidence-based strategies for prevention, diagnosis, management, and safe return to sport.
  7. Identify, evaluate, and manage systemic conditions impacting athletes, including overtraining syndrome and rheumatologic disorders, while differentiating these from common musculoskeletal presentations.
  8. Assess biomechanical and training factors in runners to guide gait modification, reduce injury risk, and implement prevention strategies.
