CHAMP Perinatal Psychiatry ECHO: PTSD and Trauma in the Perinatal Period - 6/5/2025

The Indiana CHAMP Psychiatry Access Program is excited to offer an 8-session ECHO track focused on key topics in perinatal psychiatry. This series is designed for primary care providers—including physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, nurses, and social workers—who care for pregnant and postpartum patients. Sessions will cover essential topics such as Perinatal Mental Health 101, infant-mother psychotherapy, prescribing for mood and anxiety disorders, perinatal psychosis, ADHD, PTSD, trauma, substance use disorders, and the intersection of breastfeeding and mental health.

1. Participants will be able to identify common perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and describe their impact on maternal and infant health outcomes.
2. Participants will learn how to apply evidence-based screening tools (e.g., EPDS, PHQ-9) to assess and diagnose perinatal psychiatric conditions in clinical practice.
3. Participants will learn appropriate risk-benefit analysis when prescribing psychiatric medications during pregnancy and lactation.
4. Participants will be able to implement strategies for interdisciplinary collaboration to improve care coordination and referral pathways for perinatal patients
5. Participants will be able to utilize effective communication techniques to counsel patients and families on perinatal mental health disorders and treatment options.
6. Participants will be able to evaluate barriers to integrating perinatal psychiatric care into practice and develop strategies to overcome them.
