Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is a systemic neuroimmune condition characterized by post-exertional malaise (a reduction in functioning and a severe worsening of symptoms after even minimal exertion). It causes dysregulation of  the immune, nervous, and energy metabolism systems. The effects of ME are devastating enough to leave 25% of patients housebound or bed bound.

Jennifer Brea's Sundance award-winning documentary, Unrest, is a personal journey from patient to advocate to storyteller. Jennifer is twenty-eight years-old, working on her PhD at Harvard, and months away from marrying the love of her life when a mysterious fever leaves her bedridden. When doctors tell her it's "all in her head," she picks up her camera as an act of defiance and brings us into a hidden world of millions that medicine abandoned.

Examining Recent Evidence Supporting DOAC Use in the Reduction of Thrombotic Events in Diverse Cardiovascular Patients
Examining Recent Evidence Supporting DOAC Use in the Reduction of Thrombotic Events in Diverse Cardiovascular Patients Banner Air Date: 03-07-18 Specialties: Cardiology, Family Practice, Internal Medicine
Credits: AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), Non-Physician (1.00 hours)

In this clinical commentary, a panel of three faculty experts review clinical data on the use of DOACs for vascular protection in patients with cardiovascular disease. The discussion will provide an in-depth analysis of safety and efficacy data on prophylactic DOAC use for reducing and/or preventing thrombotic events in patients with atherosclerotic disease. The discussion will also examine recently published trial data and interpret potential implications of these findings in the context of complex, diverse patient populations.

Patients who experience a cardiovascular event or have peripheral artery disease require long-term antithrombotic prophylaxis to reduce the risk of recurrent cardiac events. Formulating complex regimens for secondary prevention of subsequent cardiovascular events and improved long-term cardiovascular outcomes poses a significant clinical challenge, and patients continue to experience events and associated mortality. The purpose of this activity is to review past and current clinical trial evidence investigating anticoagulant use in the reduction of thrombotic events in diverse cardiovascular patients. Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other interprofessional healthcare team providers are missing opportunities to recommend and vaccinate adolescents with HPV vaccine.  The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that all boys and girls receive the HPV at age 11 or 12 when the immune response to the vaccine is optimal. This activity provides compelling stories of several individuals fighting cervical cancer.  Expert physicians from around the world provide the scientific and medical background related to the disease process and prevention provided by the HPV vaccine.

The Indiana Immunization Coalition’s HPV  Provider Resource Tool Kit will be provided along with the film.  The tool kit provides best practices information related to the scope of the problem (low HPV vaccination rates), the burden of disease associated with the HPV virus, the importance of recommending the vaccine alongside the other adolescent vaccines, strategies for discussing HPV and the vaccine with patients, and resources that providers can use to educate parents about HPV and the vaccine.
