2nd Annual Riley Hospital Surgical Research Day

Basic science and clinical surgical research are the pillars of the mission as academicians and surgeon-scientists at Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana University School of Medicine, and Indiana University Health. The presentations at the 2nd Annual Riley Hospital Surgical Research Day will highlight the collaborative, inspiring, and innovative work being done by the surgical and anesthesiology faculty, house staff, nurses, and medical students at Riley Hospital.

This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Sundeep Keswani, Surgical Director of Basic Science Research at Texas Children's Hospital and Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Prior to joining Texas Children's Hospital, Dr. Keswani was an attending surgeon at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Dr. Keswani's clinical interests are in fetal diagnosis and therapy, neonatal surgery, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, ECMO, and pediatric wound care. His NIH funded laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms of regenerative fetal tissue repair and is actively developing novel therapeutics to achieve postnatal regenerative wound healing.

1. Evaluate and appraise research being performed by members of the Department of Surgery at Riley Hospital for Children;
2. Describe and explain the most recent knowledge pertaining to national and local quality initiatives in the field of surgery; and
3. Implement collaborative quality improvement measures such as clinical registries, feedback about comparative performance, and identifying and implementing best practices, based on documented data.
