Overview
Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease. This critical problem can best be addressed through an integration of medical and dental services. The American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that a child's first dental visit be at or before age one. This first visit provides a foundation for prevention through education. Many parents, regardless of education level and many providers do not realize the importance of early dentist visits.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Develop strategies to support early childhood visits.
  2. Recognize the importance of early oral health intervention thought research, data, experiences, dental, and medical practitioners.
  3. Identify where reimbursement is available for these visits in your practice.
  4. Demonstrate how to perform a caries risk assessment, apply fluoride varnish, and provide oral health counseling in the primary care setting.

Accreditation

The Indiana University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Indiana University School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Marriage and Family Therapist and Mental Health Counselor Board to provide Category I Continuing Education program.  This activity qualifies for 7.25 Category I CEU as outlined by the Indiana Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board.

The Indiana University School of Nursing Center for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Centers Commission on Accreditation.
