Overview
This two-day online intensive institute provides an overview of the basics of grounded theory research. Grounded theory is one of the most common qualitative research methodologies used in health research. The institute is designed for professionals and students in all health and social science disciplines and at any place along their grounded theory journey. Attendees receive didactic lectures that address the background and philosophy of grounded theory research, study procedures, steps of data analysis, techniques for writing grounded theory grant proposals, and strategies to enhance study credibility. The institute also includes “hands-on” activities aim at framing an interview question, developing an interview guide, and analyzing data. Dr. Draucker uses examples from her own grounded theory research to enrich discussions.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the historical and philosophical evolution of grounded theory research
  2. Describe the key tenets of grounded theory methods including constant comparison analysis, theoretical sampling, memo-writing, and theory construction
  3. Propose a research question aimed at uncovering a psychosocial process within the attendee’s substantive area
  4. Create a grounded theory interview guide
  5. Conduct initial and focused coding on narrative data
  6. Describe key components of a grounded theory study proposal
  7. Identify several procedures to ensure credibility of grounded theory studies
