Overview

The IU Health Perioperative Symposium: Collaborative Approach to Reducing HAIs will explore and examine the best practices, ideas, and topics pertaining to the prevention of Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAIs). The symposium will create a forum to share ideas and collaborate in new ways that will result in better patient outcomes.

Topics will include:Collaboration between OR, SPD, Surgeons and Infection Prevention help to prevent surgical site infections;

  • Improve sterilization and high-level disinfection (HLD) processes using evidence-based procedures;
  • Discuss and identify the roles and  responsibilities of the OR, SPD, regarding the best practices and regulatory standards of processing  instruments;
  • Bust down silos to open up communication to collaborate, educate, empower, and engage all members of the perioperative team to achieve quality outcomes; and
  • Discuss key principles to include situation monitoring mutual support, trust and a shared mental model.
  • As a result of this program, health systems will benefit better care and system performance by narrowing the gaps in health care delivery and translating the best science and knowledge into effective professional training & development. 

    The IU health Perioperative Symposium: A Collaborative Approach to Reducing HAIs will provide continuing education credits for Physicians, Nurses and various Allied Health professions - IAHCSMM, AORN, APIC, and AST. This program is hosted by IU Health and Circle of Care.


    Objectives

    At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: 
    1. Recognize the principles and value the ethics of interprofessional collaboration within the perioperative department and recognize the correlation to higher quality outcomes;
    2. Apply the components in forming a collegial collaborative partnership with mutual respect and trust;
    3. Apply teamwork tools to solidify the interprofessional team commitment to advancing better and safer patient care; and
    4. Recognize the definitions and expectations of CMS Immediate Jeopardy (IJ) ratings and accreditation surveyor scorecards related to surgical instrumentation risks for Surgical Site Infections.
