Introduction Statement
Dr. Mollie Gordon is a graduate of Medical School (‘05) and Psychiatry Residency at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital (‘09). Her research career began in dopamine pharmacokinetics and subsequent implications in psychiatric disease pathways. Additional research interests include terrorism and national incidents of trauma on communities. She joined the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in 2009, becoming the Associate Director of the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at Ben Taub Hospital in 2010. As a clinician-educator, and Associate Professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at BCM, she supervises medical students, resident physicians and leads an inter-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals at Ben Taub Hospital’s inpatient unit in the clinical management of acute exacerbations of chronic mental illness using a biopsychosocial model.
In 2016, in response to the recognition of caring for patients who had been victims of labor, sex and other forms of trafficking, she and her colleagues on the inpatient unit developed a research and clinical focused team to address this public health crisis and egregious human rights violation. Her team approached the city of Houston with a public health care solution to address the needs of these patients. Subsequently, they have received numerous state, federal and private foundation grants to secure the first ever fellowship in the clinical care and research study of trafficking in persons at an academic medical center. Additionally, she represents the Harris Health system as a founding member of Houston’s Healthcare Consortium on Human Trafficking, an interdisciplinary healthcare service group that develops city-wide healthcare strategies to combat trafficking. This work has been scaled across dozens of cities globally as part of the city of Houston’s Mayor Anti-Human Trafficking 10/10 Fellowship. She works closely with the city of Houston, other hospital systems, local community advocates and NGOs to care for adults who have been impacted by human trafficking. She worked with the United Nations Delta 8.7 and HEAL trafficking to advance research in the field.
Her research team has published dozens of peer reviewed papers, book chapters and the premier clinical book on the interface of mental health and human trafficking. She is considered an international expert on the topic, lecturing both locally, nationally, and internationally, training teams of direct service providers across disciplines in identifying and treating trafficked persons. She is a national speaker for HEAL trafficking and the Office of Trafficking in Persons SOAR NHTTAC Training program. In 2019 she co-founded BCM division of global mental health and directs a team of researchers and fellows in the study of violence and human trafficking as it relates to migratory immigrant and refugee communities. She is the called upon mental health expert for human trafficking court cases across the United States.
She lectures at the medical school level, and is an active participant on the Undergraduate Education Committee. She is a local and national leader, participating in the Ben Taub Department of Psychiatry Leadership Committee and Co-Chair of the American Medical Women’s Association-Physicians against the Trafficking of Humans. She is an expert witness on the mental health impacts on human trafficking. Additionally, she has advised for local NGOs and the Office of Trafficking in Persons in the Department of Health and Human Services under President Trump’s Administration. She and her team have trained dozens of international leaders through the U.S. DOD Defense Initiatives for Medical Operations. She has been recognized with numerous local and national awards for her teaching and clinical excellence.
A clinician, academician, teacher, educator and lecturer, she excels in communication, program building, impact and outcome evaluation, networking and working with local partners, governments, non governmental organizations, and public private partnerships to build capacity for gender based violence and human trafficking.
